Boa Morte Festival
Cachoeira is well known as a centre for Candomble, a syncretic religion combining traditional African religions with Catholicism. One of the most famous groups is the cult of the Good Death.
According to the Rough Guide it was ' founded by freed women slaves in the mid-nineteenth century, partly as a religious group and partly to work for the emancipation of slaves by acting as an early co-operative bank to buy people their freedom'. So much for the mystical element then, it's another lefty weekend drink and dance binge. The girls are all getting on a bit now but still manage a few processions over the course of the weekend and everyone else is there for a huge party. There is music, food and drink everywhere and particularly all night long.
This is also a centre for Samba de Roda - the traditional circle samba, and it is being played everywhere, mostly with hand instruments. The swing is particularly strong, carried by the pandeiros and the occasional ganza. It's infectious and I become an instant fan. Cachoeira also noted for it's input into the locaal reggae scene, but there is nothing outstanding on this occasion.

It is good to read that you are keeping alive the traditions that were brought over from Africa.
